Smooth muscle antibodies (SMA)

Suspicion of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1.

Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF)

The result is given as negative, weak, medium or strong positive after evaluation of fluorescence intensity.

Smooth muscle antibodies are a marker for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1 and most often a clear positive response is observed. Slight positive results can be seen in connection with infection and have lower diagnostic significance. The positive response limit is set so that no more than 5% of healthy control subjects are positive.
