Indication

Suspicion of pernicious anemia and atrophic gastritis.

Method

Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF)

Answer

The result is given as negative or positive with a titer.

Interpretation

Antibodies against parietal cells occur in atrophic gastritis and are detected in approximately 85% of patients with pernicious anemia. The antibodies also occur in 25% of the cases with autoimmune thyroid disease, which is often associated with atrophic gastritis.
